Parece ser que el barrio fue en su momento un importante bastión pied noir. Los pied noir eran los descendientes de europeos en Argelia antes de la independencia. Supongo que muchos levantinos se establecerían en ese barrio, de ahí que sí hubiese una notable presencia del catalán, pero sospecho que poco debe de quedar hoy en día.
A propósito la historia de los pied noir es interesantísima. En la novela Los centuriones de Jean Lartéguy recuerdo cómo uno de los personajes, un oficial francés, al llegar a un pueblo del interior de Argelia se refirió al barrio frances algo así como "barrio francés" entre comillas, porque sus vecinos tenían apellidos como García o Fernández. En España es muy desconocida la relación tan intensa que había en el norte de África entre los descendientes de franceses y los españoles, muchos de ellos exiliados tras la Guerra Civil. Prácticamente todos los pied noir volvieron a Europa tras 1962.
